Today's Quote:

If you surf, you are a surfer, no matter how often, or how big you ride. If today is your first day, or if you have been surfing for 40 years, no matter. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just surf. Stoke is a universal phenomenon.

Process is an absolute absorption in the act. Creativity comes when we lose ourselves and get out of our own way. When we’re older, it’s easier to understand the nature of our own life more clearly. Surfing is the journey, the ocean our subconscious, the board a vehicle for accessing the wave, and the ride takes us, transforms us, becomes us…

Stoke at an early age

The beginning stages of the art of surfing can be very challenging.  Persistence brings results and the stoke that ensues from riding waves can be profound.  If you substitute the word surfing for bicycling in this video, it will give you motivation, inspiration, and even a little bit of stoke for yourself.

The exact definition of stoke is sometimes hard to explain.  If you want to get a good idea of what stoke is, watch this video.  This kid is stoked!

Wetsuit blues

April 5, 2011 Uncategorized No Comments

Despite having taken excellent care of my Xcel wetsuit, it is failing me in my spring of need. It’s not even two years old and seams are leaking and it is looking old and tired.  I was shivering last week for the first time ever in the water. I will not be buying Xcel again and have set my sites on a Patagonia, which comes with a lifetime guarantee. Can’t wait to wear this one – I’ve already begun saving for it!

These suits can be purchased online here –> Stoke Harvester, a great online company to which I have absolutely no financial ties. Surfdaddio is and remains a comercial free site yo!

Costa Rica surf paradise at Playa Hermosa

February 15, 2011 Locals only, Surf culture No Comments

Ever dreamed about watching endless barrels roll in for days and days? Check this piece of tropical paradise at Cabinas Las Olas in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica!

At Las Olas, all they do is surf. This makes for a laid back international atmosphere that is both fun and real. Check out Taco Tuesdays at the thatched roof open-air restaurant where you can watch surfing all day long. Or stop by the restaurant before your dawn patrol session for a hearty breakfast including my favorite, gallo pinto con huevos.  Or swing by at sunset for a hearty after-surf meal. Surf culture abounds at Playa Hermosa with live music, weekly surf contests, as well as larger competitions such as the 2009 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games.

With the new road in from San Jose, Las Olas is just an hour away from the airport. They offer tours and lessons, yoga, massage and much more. Or you can pretty much surf all day long right outside your front door.
